The winner of our flashfiction competition autumn 2021 is:

Amy Elizabeth Doherty, with her piece 'Sweet'. Under the promise of the grand prize of £25, we set the challenge to write a piece of twisted flashfiction under 50 words, inspired by Erin Paton's beautiful illustration 'Whispers' (the cover of Makarelle Autumn 2021).

While we had some strong contenders, we felt that Amy's piece met our brief most closely. In only 47 words, she managed to craft a beautiful and haunting story, complete with a twist and fascinating dark imagery, closely based on Erin's drawing:

My love, you whisper from beneath the sheets. Legs wrapped around mine, soft and cunning. Will you stay with me?

Something crawls on my cheek, tasting me. You brush it away, hand burning against my cold, sour skin. I answer without words.

Of course, sweet love. Forever.
